Created in 2024, ‘The King’ is a contemporary lion painting that explores expression.

Using acrylic paint, I deliberately moved away from the lion’s natural colours, applying a different colour with almost every brush stroke to create a vibrant and energetic surface. The result is a fine art animal portrait that focuses on emotion, movement and character rather than photographic accuracy.

The sweeping brushwork throughout the mane was designed to suggest motion and energy, giving the impression that the lion is constantly moving within the painting.

As with many of my animal paintings, this piece combines bold colour choices with expressive techniques to create a unique interpretation of one of nature’s most iconic animals, the king of the jungle.
