WILD ANIMAL PAINTING
Primal
This baboon painting “Primal”, 2025, began in a loose, experimental way. The background was created by pouring paint over a black base, letting multiple tones of pink drip vertically and blend naturally. Once that had built up, I added white to bring in extra depth, soften areas, and create more contrast within the layers.
The baboon itself was one of the more challenging subjects to paint. The likeness didn’t really come through until the very end, and for a long time it felt like it was missing something. It all came together through the eyes, which completely changed the character and gave the painting its identity.
The face is built from bold layers of black, pink, red and blue, creating a striking, expressive focal point. This contrasts strongly with the softer pink background and the warmer yellow tones in the fur, helping the subject stand forward and feel more alive.
